Mother's Day
What an awesome day. We as a nation take time to honor our mothers. It is a time of reflection, a time of remembrance, a time of joy and for some a time of sorrow, sadness and pain.
Some of us remember our mother as a warm, caring, compassionate woman who tender and busy hands responded to our demands. Someone who taught us, hugged us, blessed us, and took the hurt away.
For some, it's hard to image, because perhaps your mother didn't understand her role. Perhaps she was abusive, concerned about her own needs more than yours. Maybe she never accepted the joy that God had intended for her to receive through you. And so this day, isn't as special.
For some perhaps you recently became a mother. You have so many unanswered questions, so many feelings of fear, anxiety, happiness, and love running through your emotional being. Take peace.
And for some, perhaps your mother passed away. You sit and wonder how you will make it. Remembering her, remembering and missing the great times and the no so great times. You long for her insight and guidance or even just her presence. Take peace.
God has gifted, equipped, and instructed mothers to teach us and train us. They have the ability to instill self-confidence and the freedom to be who we are.
They are the hand that reaches out to help in our time of need. They are the smile we seek when we have our first successes in life. Mothers are special because they can accept a dandelion from their child and know that it's a beautiful flower. They can see all the drawings are works of art. They read bedtime stories that stay in our hearts forever.
Mothers have all of these gifts and more. Some of us look at other moms and wonder "Why can't my mom be more like her?" Some of us ponder what it would have been like with a different mother. A Mother who didn't criticize every little thing we did. One who showed us love and nurtured us. One who taught and trained us and didn't control and dictate us.
It is unfortunate that some mothers couldn't or didn't receive the knowledge and truth about their true God-given identity as a mother. Perhaps through the generations, their mothers didn't receive or know it either and so we have a lineage of hurt women continuing to hurt their children and their children's children.
I believe it can change today. Today, women, you can learn what it means to be a Godly mother. You see, I believe Proverbs 31 tells a lot about not only about a woman as a wife, but also as a mother.
Let's read it. Proverbs 31, starting in verse 10: as we read I will interject some comments and I would like you to picture this great and noble woman as a mother
10 A wife of noble character who can find? She is worth far more than rubies.
(A mother is worth far more than rubies)
11 Her husband has full confidence in her and lacks nothing of value.
(Her children have full confidence in her and they lack nothing of value)
12 She brings him good, not harm, all the days of her life.
(She brings them good, not harm, all the days of her life)
13 She selects wool and flax and works with eager hands.
(She shops)
14 She is like the merchant ships, bringing her food from afar.
(She cooks)
15 She gets up while it is still dark; she provides food for her family and portions for her servant girls.
(She cooks more)
16 She considers a field and buys it; out of her earnings she plants a vineyard.
(She saves and invests)
17 She sets about her work vigorously; her arms are strong for her tasks.
(She works out and exercises)
18 She sees that her trading is profitable, and her lamp does not go out at night.
19 In her hand she holds the distaff and grasps the spindle with her fingers.
20 She opens her arms to the poor and extends her hands to the needy.
(She gives and is compassionate)
21 When it snows, she has no fear for her household; for all of them are clothed in scarlet.
(She makes sure her children and husband are dressed warmly)
22 She makes coverings for her bed; she is clothed in fine linen and purple.
(She makes up the beds and dresses herself nice)
23 Her husband is respected at the city gate, where he takes his seat among the elders of the land.
(Her children are respected by the neighbors)
24 She makes linen garments and sells them, and supplies the merchants with sashes.
(She is creative and inventive and an entrepreneur.)
25 She is clothed with strength and dignity; she can laugh at the days to come.
(She has a sense of humor and is honored to have her responsibilities as a mother.)
26 She speaks with wisdom, and faithful instruction is on her tongue.
(She is smart and teaches her children the ways of the Lord.)
27 She watches over the affairs of her household and does not eat the bread of idleness.
(She pays the bills. She is not lazy.)
28 Her children arise and call her blessed; her husband also, and he praises her:
(She is appreciated)
29 "Many women do noble things, but you surpass them all."
(Because you are a Godly mother)
30 Charm is deceptive, and beauty is fleeting; but a woman who fears the LORD is to be praised.
31 Give her the reward she has earned, and let her works bring her praise at the city gate.
You see a mother has tremendous responsibility. Her reward is great, in fact, I would say it can't be measured, it's treasured.
If we didn't have these great mothers around, how would the world survive? Who would know how to make rainy days fun? And who would keep the pets and goldfish alive?
It's true that we as a nation have lost the value of motherhood. We don't respect it as a vital role as we should.
My wife, the mother of my children, who is blessed with the awesome task of raising our sons, is labeled a "stay-at-home Mom".
Over the past few months, I have thought more and more about how ironic that term actually was. The mother of my kids doesn't stay at home. In fact – she does more driving and than I do, nearly twice as much! She runs to more stores than I could count – and the funny thing is – she's not shopping for herself.
She seems to automatically inherit and take care of pets that once belonged to our kids.
Goodness, all that to truly say, God bless our mothers. What an huge and honorable task you have. We applaud you, we appreciate you, and we honor and thank you for the sacrifices you have made for us. When we take the time as children to do what the bible says and honor our mother, perhaps our mothers will become the mothers we all dreamed about.
Let’s pray.
